Alsoberry Kaumu Hanchett, MD, Class of 1914, First Hawaiian Graduate of HMS

Alsoberry Kaumu (A.K.) Hanchett was the first native Hawaiian person to attend Harvard Medical School. He was born in Kauai and completed his early education in Honolulu at the local Kamehameha School. Dr. Hanchett completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University as the first recipient of a financial sponsorship from the Harvard Club of Hawaii. He went on to attend HMS in 1910, earning his MD in 1914. After graduating from HMS, Dr. Hanchett interned at Providence Hospital in Providence, RI for two years before returning to Hawaii. He opened a medical office in Honolulu, HI and became the first Western-trained physician to practice on the island. During World War I, he served as a major in the Medical Corps. In 1918, Dr. Hanchett became the first county physician of Honolulu.
